It attaches to both chimney liner and solid-pack, factory-build chimneys by sliding inside with a tight friction fit. Many localities, primarily California, have codes that call for 1/2 spark arrestors. The California state building code calls for such spark arrestors on all new construction. The mesh on this cap measures 5/8 from center to center, but still won't let a 1/2 sphere through. Therefore the mesh adheres to these code requirements but also maintains a somewhat clog resistance.
